What soundcard do you have?
There is a known bug which affects almost all laptops I have recently
seen with a Maestro2 sound chip. This is a known problem, with a fix
here:

My laptop and Richards both suffer this problem, and given the ubiquity
of Maestro chips in recent laptops, its a fairly safe bet :)
