No.
This is Redhat being less than helpful.
ext3 was not included in the stock kernel, until either 2.4.15 or 2.4.16
(I don't remember which).
You should compile 2.4.16 (which has it)
or I belive the -ac kernels had it since sometime around
2.4.9-ac<something>
and *don't* compile as a module, if / is ext3, if / is ext3, you have to
have it compiled into the kernel (the machine will still work with it as
a module, it will (or rather "should") fall back to ext2).
