I tried the Driver "mga" line last night, and X wouldn't start. I got a lot
of
X-is-almost-there screen flashes, then a message that gdm had been murdered
mysteriously.
I love some of these messages :-)

I have installed all of the XFree4.0.1a RPMs that came on the RH7 disks.

I'm assuming that Rawhide is the development RH stuff? At any good mirror
near me?

 Grrr.

Strangely, running XConfigurator identifies the card OK as a 16Mb G400, and
specifies the SVGA driver plus a new line saying
XFree4 driver (not used by default): mga

Another thing I thought about - does the kernel matrox stuff need to be
modules
or can it be built in?
Am I missing something else driver wise, or is it all in the kernel (can't
quite believe than)

 Cheers.
