After running Cruncheee from a USB memory stick at the Sheflug
meeting, I finally took the plunge and overwrote the Xandros install
(the next day).

After spending a day installing all the software not installed by
default (OpenOffice, GIMP, Audacity, Wine, Google Gears, FBReader,
GnomeSword, ThotKeeper, KeepassX) and removing a few that I'll never
use (Bittorrent client, RSS reader (I use Google Reader), email client
(Gmail + Gears)), I am really happy with the results.

The battery life is better (thanks to 'powersave mode'), packages are
more up to date (and kept up to date) and most things are easier to
configure (with lots of nice keyboard shortcuts).

The downsides are the very dark theme (that lasted about 30min on my
computer, before I chose a new one), the brightness controls sometimes
get confused ('brightness up' likes to go all the way down to min
brightness, before it goes up again), the power button switches off
instantly (despite being set to 'ask me'), I can't figure out how to
hide the bottom panel (which is handy with sites like google reader,
as an alternative to fullscreen) and finally if I boot with wireless
off, I need to reboot (with it on), before it can see any wireless
access points.

Much happier than I was with the original install (even after I'd
hacked it mercilessly).

Davo
