[Sheflug] Installation hangs during disk format

Having some problems with installing SuSE (7.3 or 8.0) on an older P100 
machine with a 2GB Quantum Fireball drive. Same machine has been running Red 
Hat for a few years.
Everything seems OK until the hard disk formatting starts, then the 
controller / disk seems to hang (have tried this several times - and have 
gone away and had my tea just in case I am too impatient!) Using Yast in 
manual mode or Yast2 - same results.

Have tried partitioning / formatting Ext2 using Partition Magic & this is OK 
but a Suse installation fails everytime.

Would guess its some hangup with the IDE controller but am a bit stuck about 
what to look for.
