Thanks to all of you who offered various suggestions about my random
crashes.  I've tried setting up the magic sysrq keys, but the machine
did not respond to them when it had frozen.  I've also run memtest86,
and not found any memory errors.  Oh well, back to the drawing board
tomorrow ....
