 No doubt everyone else knows more about this that me, but the core
files are core dumps - debuging information from when a program crashes.
 They're not plaintext, IIRC, but there are programs out there to read
them with.

 Me, I just delete them. It is possible to limit where core files are
dumped - i.e. none in /home etc, but I've forgotten how to do it.
