Haven't tried this recently, but instead of a "do-nothing" shell, have
a shell script that spawns minicom.
Why a shell script? Because minicom may depend on (or at least be
more convenient with) certain environment variables set (that aren't
set by poppa-init or getty). The shell script is the obvious place to
do that.
You can do this on only one of the VCs. Then the others are available
for ordinary logins. Convenient switching. If there are other
no-login-needed apps being hosted on the machine, you can do them too,
one per VC.
I believe you can have pretty much as many VCs as you want, but this
is a compile configure option in the kernel. (Can't swear to that.)
Also, look up whether minicom can spawn a shell.
gpm, much as I normally hate it, can be used to cat and paste between
VCs, or between an inferior shell and minicom.
