help with Kmail

Help. I just can't get the thing to work,
when I'm on line and try to get mail I get this error message " account:
mail. virgin.net in OPEN; the sever was not found"  in the network
settings I'm set to SMTP mail. virgin.net and the port is 25. If I set
it too sendmail the entire system locks and I have to reboot. what am I
doing wrong
