I corrected the error and I've changed .fetchmailrc to.....

poll mailserver.myisp.co.uk  protocol POP3  username  meathome  
password

and I'm getting   .fetchmailrc:8:parse error at end of input.

So, I changed that to.......

poll mailserver.myisp.co.uk  protocol POP3  username  meathome  
password   thepassword

and I've done fetchmail -v  and it seems to be working.  No mail is 
downloaded though.  Only downloads with Netscape and Kmail.  If I 
type in  fetchmail -v  once again I get "can't accept options while a 
background fetchmail is running".

Hmmm....
