First of all let me state that I'm a linux novice, so take anything I say 
with a large pinch of salt. I have though, got nfs to work on the 
mack#hines I'm playing around with.

As regards the smb.conf file, you need to include the line
browseble = yes
in the [Homes] section. Regarding being able to 'ping' the machine, are the 
two machines on the same network segment and if not, is there a gateway 
between them? This might be your problem.
