A bit of a wild statement. I've "pissed" around with the kernel for all
sorts of reasons - screwed it up and spat it out and have never ever had
to do a re-install of the apps - the "distibution". Indeed that is the
beauty of Linux, the kernel is sufficiently decoupled from most apps etc
that you can do this messing around thing and re-fix stuff - IF you know
what you are doing.

The having-to-re-install-the-whole-shebang mindset is a microsoft thing.
Sure, if one is new to Unix/Linux a reinstall is often the only thing that
anyone can think of doing and can give peace of mind. But that is probably
because the necessary full understanding isn't yet there, and to me the
real fun of Linux is that everything is there, the docs, the advice, the
source Luke, to enable me to move to the full understanding.
